By becoming a Citizen Scientist, you will be joining a growing community of locals who are actively helping to protect and restore one of Perth’s most important wetlands. As a citizen scientist, you’ll have the opportunity to collect real ecological data — from water levels and quality, to bird and flora surveys — that play a crucial role in supporting conservation efforts, informing scientific analysis, and guiding decisions made by local councils.
You don’t need any prior experience — just curiosity and a willingness to learn. We’ll provide all the training and tools you need, ensuring that you’re equipped to contribute meaningfully to the project. You’ll be mentored by experts and work alongside fellow volunteers, creating an enriching learning environment.
This is more than just volunteering, the knowledge you gain will give you a deeper understanding of the natural world and how to protect it. Plus, as you build your skills in environmental monitoring, you’ll be directly contributing to real-world scientific research with lasting impact. This is hands-on science with real-world impact, and you’re invited to be part of it.
Information we collect includes water levels in both lakes, Herdsman Main Drain pumping activity, daily rainfall and evaporation.
Using equipment supplied by the Town of Cambridge, these intrepid citizen scientists are measuring kay aspects of water butrents
The presence, number and location of animals enhances our understanding of the impact of water levels and quality on our fauna.
Join our “Spot it, Share it” mission to help protect the incredible wildlife of Perry Lakes. By sharing what you see, you’re contributing valuable knowledge that supports conservation and helps us care for these precious wetlands. Snap a photo, note the details, and send it in — your eyes on the lakes make a difference!
By sharing the knowledge we collect about Perry Lakes and the environment, we aim to promote greater appreciation of preservation and conservation. From observational data, to educational events led by experts in their field, information will be available on our site.
Don is Hydrogeologist Adjunct Professor at UWA after a career in water research. His interests include managed aquifer recharge, climate change impacts on hydrology and remote sensing.
Andrew is a conservation biologist who has dedicated much of his 45 year career to biodiversity conservation, particularly in Western Australia.
Tony is responsible for developing and executing our monthly field work activities and liaising with the Town of Cambridge
